About Us

We are the members of a small logging cooperative (known as an “ejido”) from the town of Palmito, Sinaloa. Our town was created when the Durango highway was being built in the 1950s. Historically we have provided for our families by making a modest living by selectively logging pine trees on our cooperatively owned lands.
Even though we have followed a strict management plan we realized that we could not provide for our families indefinitely in this manner. Our forest needed to rest. We needed to find a way to protect our forest and the animals so that our children could enjoy the spiritual and financial benefits in the years to come.
Over the years we had noticed that many people were coming to see the Chara Pinta (Tufted Jay) and enjoy our beautiful lands so we decided to build cabins to provide accommodations. With financial help from the government forestry department and support from Sendero Mexico LTD we completed the first stage of our nature resort in April of 2005. Also during this time we began looking for funding to create a preserve to protect our lands. In December 2005 we received funding from Pronatura Noroeste (NGO) that made The Tufted Jay Preserve a reality.
In the near future, to make our guests stay more comfortable, we will begin construction of a restaurant and other facilities on the Mesa de los Alisos.
